About Auroville Festival 2023

We wish you all a wonderful new year – 2023!

Every year, during February, we celebrate Auroville Week, from Mother’s birthday on the 21st to Auroville’s birthday on the 28th. Since last year, we’ve consolidated it with a dedicated team to organise the week as ‘Auroville Festival’. From this year onwards, Auroville Festival shall be one of the events under AWARE, a unit under Auroville Services Trust. Each year, we plan to observe a theme and organise the festival activities under that umbrella. In 2022, the theme was ‘Unity’ and we explored topics such as unity in community, unity with the neighboring villages, manifesting City for Unity, along with the announcement of Sri Aurobindo’s 150th Birth Anniversary year.

Sri Aurobindo's First Dream

This year - 2023 - also happens to be India’s 75th Independence Year. In 1947, on the eve of India’s independence, Sri Aurobindo expressed his 5 Dreams for New India. And, the first one is about a ‘United India’.

“The first of these dreams was a revolutionary movement which would create a free and united India. India today is free but she has not achieved unity.

At one moment it almost seemed as if in the very act of liberation she would fall back into the chaos of separate States which preceded the British conquest. But fortunately it now seems probable that this danger will be averted and a large and powerful, though not yet a complete union will be established. Also, the wisely drastic policy of the Constituent Assembly has made it probable that the problem of the depressed classes will be solved without schism or fissure. But the old communal division into Hindus and Muslims seems now to have hardened into a permanent political division of the country. It is to be hoped that this settled fact will not be accepted as settled for ever or as anything more than a temporary expedient. For if it lasts, India may be seriously weakened, even crippled: civil strife may remain always possible, possible even a new invasion and foreign conquest. India’s internal development and prosperity may be impeded, her position among the nations weakened, her destiny impaired or even frustrated. This must not be; the partition must go. Let us hope that that may come about naturally, by an increasing recognition of the necessity not only of peace and concord but of common action, by the practice of common action and the creation of means for that purpose. In this way unity may finally come about under whatever form—the exact form may have a pragmatic but not a fundamental importance. But by whatever means, in whatever way, the division must go; unity must and will be achieved, for it is necessary for the greatness of India’s future.”

Welcome to Auroville Festival!

21st to 28th February, 2023

From this year onwards, for the next five years, we shall focus on one dream, during Auroville Festival. Thus, this year, the theme of Auroville Festival is ‘United India’. His dream is an apt reminder, for us all to steer India towards its future greatness. We shall use the occasion of the festival to impress Indians about the rightful direction for the country, as seen by the foremost seer, freedom fighter, poet and philosopher of India. In His dream, he has mentioned the necessity of a common action, and creation of means for that purpose.

We’ve further defined the common action into six major directional aspects – social, economical, geopolitical, technological, ecological, and cultural. During the eight days of the festival, these aspects shall be the focus of one day each. We shall focus on each subject and its contribution to the idea of United India. On the occasion of Mother’s birthday, on the 21st, the focus shall be on Mother & Mother India. And, on the occasion of the Auroville’s birthday, on the 28th, the focus shall be on ‘Auroville & United India’.

Each day, we shall begin with some calming and centering activities, and then move on to some physical activities, where body is activated and energised. Further, there shall be activities, that touches the participants and attendees life in a positive manner. After lunch, some discussions and lectures have been planned to cater to the cerebral needs, wherein, we shall dive into the details of the possible common actions. Finally, the evenings shall end with some lively cultural activities, each day.

We invite the interested residents of Auroville to become part of the festival, as they feel called. The festival is planned and managed by the residents themselves.
